Educationwww.crestviewchamber.com 41 By building partnerships across public, private, and community sectors, the HSU Educational Foundation inspires students by offering innovative, valuable learning opportunities not always accessible in the traditional classroom setting. Through partnership support, the HSU Educational Foundation offers a multifaceted approach to workforce development by offering diverse programming that includes: Student Workshops, Camps, Demo Days and Enrichment; Game Changers: Family Science Saturdays; Competition Programs and Solving Grand Challenges; Educate the Educator: Professional Training and Industry Engagement; T.E.A.M.S. (Teaching Excellence Awards in Mathematics and Science): Community Recognition of S.T.E.M. Educators; SPARKS Scholars (weekly after school S.T.E.M. programming in partnership with the school board); Guardians of the Dream: Inspiring the Entrepreneurial Spirit. Recent successes include significant participation growth within the first year of our Drone Team Challenge (DTC) program. At the first DTC competition held in January of 2019 – 74 participants represented 9 registered elementary, middle and high school teams and at the final competition in May over one hundred attendees participated as part of 14 teams with a total of 20 registered teams in the program. This exceeded the original objective set for the program’s first year and is anticipated to continue expanding into the 2019-2020 Drone Team Challenge program season. Another success is the development of the HSU STEM Range, a 400-acre area located in Laurel Hill, 8 miles north of Crestview includes uncontrolled Class G airspace to 700 feet for flying UAV’s, which makes it an ideal location for business and recreational use. The HSU STEM Range is being developed to provide a location able to provide training in the field of unmanned vehicles for multiple industry uses. It will be a haven for agricultural field studies and youth environmental programs of all kinds. The HSU Educational Foundation has just begun its first Capital Campaign to continue construction on the two HSU Innovation Institutes located in Fort Walton Beach and Crestview. Funds are needed to further the process of converting the facilities and creating safe educational spaces that will help prepare students (elementary through high school) by increasing their technology skills and knowledge, providing greater awareness and access to successful career pathways, while strengthening career interest and readiness in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). These students will learn the high demand STEM skills that lead to innovative tech and STEM related careers.
