The beautiful weather and laid-back lifestyle attracts millions of Californians who call the Golden State their home. The warm weather year-round also attracts pesky insects who manage to find their way into every Californian’s house, promising to annoy anyone who lives there. Luckily, there is a natural solution to repel these bugs, accessible to any Californian with a pot and some soil: rosemary. Although fragrant to the human nose, the scent of rosemary repels insects, specifically mosquitoes and flies. Using dried rosemary is best to help rid your home of these critters. Mix 1 full cup of dried rosemary with 1 quart of water, and let boil for 30 minutes. Then, combine with 1 quart of cold water. Pour this rosemary mixture into a spray bottle, and spray onto surfaces where flies and mosquitoes might be attracted. To grow rosemary at home, it is easiest to use rosemary stems rather than seeds. Cut the prickly leaves off of the bottom, leaving two inches of a clean rosemary stem. Then, submerge the two-inch stem into a glass of water. After three weeks, roots should begin to take shape; this means the rosemary is ready to pot in soil! When first caring for this plant, make sure to keep it in a warm and humid place. Leaving it outside in the spring and summer will be sufficient. In colder climates, bring the plant inside, keeping it in a spot where it can receive abundant amounts of sunlight. Rosemary’s benefits are not limited to repelling insects, and the plant can be used throughout the year. Including rosemary in recipes can offer a great source of antioxidants, helping to boost the immune system, as well as increasing alertness and focus. One of my favorite uses for rosemary in the kitchen is baking rosemary soft pretzels. This quick recipe produces twelve soft pretzels, which can be stored in the freezer for up to three weeks. Just simply reheat in the microwave or toaster oven! INGREDIENTS: 1 packet active yeast 1 and ½ cups warm water 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar 4 cups all-purpose flour 1 beaten egg » Preheat oven to 425 degrees fahrenheit. » Combine the packet of active yeast and warm water in a large mixing bowl. » Mix in salt and sugar. » Using a wooden spoon, gradually mix in all-purpose flour until the mixture is no longer sticky. » After generously coating a cutting board with flour, roll the dough into 15 inch strips. » Twist the strips of dough into a pretzel shape. » After beating 1 egg in a bowl, dip both sides of your pretzel into the egg wash, then place the pretzel onto a lightly oiled baking sheet. » Sprinkle sea salt and fresh sprigs of rosemary onto the pretzel (to taste). » Bake your pretzels at 425 degrees fahrenheit for 10 minutes. » You can serve with sweet mustard and melted cheddar cheese. Enjoy! Through diligent efforts of residents, Southern Pacific Railroad gave the city permission to operate a museum on the site of the now 1913 passenger station. We've been open to the public ever since. The Porterville Historical Museum houses one of the largest local collections of Yokut woven baskets and relics. We are also home to a plethora of farm equipment, locally significant vehicles, as well as a train engine, and other relics still surviving from the building’s original operation as a train station.
