Georgetown is considered one of the “jewels” of Sussex County whose focal point is our beautiful circle that hosts many weddings, the Christmas Parade and local school prom promenades. As the County Seat we are home to all of our court systems, superior court, family court, chan- cery court and a host of agencies that make use of the courts as well as the law firms whose business revolves around the courts. Georgetown is host to a variety of festivals: ⚫Wings & Wheels , which is a family friendly festi- val that takes place the first weekend in October. ⚫The Hispanic Festival which takes place every year in August. ⚫Return Day – our most historical festival that is over 200 years old and was born out of a way to get the election results from the Town Crier. The festival takes place every 2 years and has grown into a 2 day festival that is attended by locals and visitors from all over the Delmarva Peninsula. The Georgetown Chamber membership is made up of small and large businesses throughout the county and due to it’s educational facilities and the County Seat, feels very strongly about work- force development and housing, as well providing resources that our businesses are in need of. As the community with the only airport in the county, we are home to Aloft Aero which is the only company that offers a diverse portfolio of products and services that are sought after by both US and international companies. The air- port also offers one of only a handful of business parks in the county, but the only that has access to air & rail. Thank you for being a part of our community and if you are just visiting, we hope you stay awhile and venture into the community to visit our museums, ballfields and restaurants. Together, the stores promote over one hundred unique small businesses and antique dealers who share a passion for gently used home goods. In 2015, Jane Houtman’s bookkeeping experience present- ed her with an opportunity she couldn’t resist—the chance to take over the original Antique Alley of Bridgeville location on Sussex Highway. Recognizing its immense potential, she set out to create a store that would support local businesses and offer rare and sought-after items. Within three years, she opened a second store, Downtown Alley, which focuses on gifts and boutiques. The store fea- tures local artisans, tasty jams, spices, and sauces, as well as a selection of over two hundred varieties of mix-and- match K-Cups. With the onslaught of mass-produced products in chain stores, it’s becoming harder to find antiques and vintage items, as Jane Houtman points out. Traditionally, antique shopping has been associated with an older demographic. Houtman revealed that her stores initially catered to people over sixty, but as she began targeting a younger customer base, she witnessed a shift. A new generation concerned with wastage and sustainability began frequenting the stores to discover fresh purposes for older pieces. The allure of older, sturdily crafted furniture blending with modern designs has become a popular trend. “That’s the style now—to mix the old with the new,” said Houtman. The most sought-after items are vinyl records, which fly off the shelves daily and blow molds used for Christmas decora- tions. Vintage glass insulators, once used to insulate electri- cal wiring on electricity poles, have found a new purpose as stylish house decorations and vases. Classic Coca-Cola sig- nage, Barbie dolls, and snow sleds are also favorites. For those looking to indulge their creativity, Antique Alley of Bridgeville offers an in-store DIY studio. Here, shoppers can repaint furniture using the popular Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint or take classes in resin glass, sign, or jewelry making. “It’s a fun afternoon out with girlfriends. They get to make something, take it home, and we provide refreshments while they’re doing it,” shares Houtman. Both of her antique stores have evolved into not just shop- ping pitstops but an entire day of enjoyment. In the summer months, the stores transform into vibrant gathering spots where customers can explore antiques with a complimentary coffee or tea in hand or socialize outside in the Downtown Alley Cafe. If you haven’t experienced the charm of Antique Alley of Bridgeville or Downtown Alley yet, come and discover all the hidden gems and unique offerings. Don’t miss out on the excitement – visit the stores today and see what all the buzz is about. This event is held at the Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown and features aircrafts, a classic car show, entertainment, kids activities, all types of vendors and much more. The festival is held every year, the first weekend in October, and is a weekend that is much antici- pated by the local community, surrounding com- munities and states. Wings & Wheels is a unique opportunity to learn more about aviation and mil- itary history. The weekend begins with a Pathways to Avia- tion program for high school kids, allowing them opportunities to be up close to many types of avi- ation related vendors, corporations, military and schools, with the goal being to encourage careers in aviation. Later in the evening, we are able to en- joy a pre-event — the Night in the Tropics, with a catered dinner buffet, entertainment, and the ability for pictures with several WWII era aircraft. Saturday is event day and the entire day is just jam packed with family fun. We have a large static display of aircrafts, huge classic car show, enter- tainment, kids activities, USNA Academy para- chute team jumps, a fun pilot competition — “Flour Drop”, WWII re-enactors, food, craft and informa- tion vendors, definitely something for everyone. Bringing together many non-profits, schools, military components, Wings & Wheels showcases our military history and our beautiful airport to the community. It is a festival unlike any other in the county and provides memorable and amazing mo- ments for everyone who attends. Wings & Wheels, Where the Road Meets the SkyNext >
