As we step into a new era, it’s more crucial than ever for local organizations, busi- nesses, and residents to come together to focus on community enrichment. From strengthening local connections to enhancing economic vitality, community enrichment serves as the foundation for a thriving Northwest Indiana. At its core, community enrichment is about investing in the people, infrastructure, and pro- grams that make a region a great place to live, work, and play. It involves fostering inclusivity, promoting education, supporting arts and cul- ture, improving health and wellness, and creating WWW.CROSSROADSCHAMBER.ORG 4 COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT Community Enrichment in Northwest Indiana: A Foundation for Growth and Prosperity By Kelly Anoe, President & CEO, Legacy Foundationeconomic opportunities for everyone. It’s the recognition that the success of a community is not just about individual achievements, but about collective progress. In Northwest Indiana, where industries have evolved and communities have faced challenges, the importance of these collective efforts cannot be overstated. By focusing on community enrichment, we not only enhance the lives of individuals but also lay the groundwork for a more prosper- ous and resilient region for generations to come. Key Areas of Community Enrichment in Northwest Indiana 1.Education and Workforce Development Education is the cornerstone of community development. As businesses in Northwest Indiana continue to innovate and expand, there is an increasing need for a well-trained, skilled workforce. Investing in education and workforce de- velopment ensures that our region remains competitive. Legacy Foundation supports efforts to provide access to quality education and training programs that empower in- dividuals to reach their full potential through partnerships with educational institutions such as Ivy Tech, Indiana Uni- versity Northwest, Purdue Northwest, and Calumet College. 2.Arts, Culture, and Environment Northwest Indiana is home to a rich tapestry of envi- ronmental assets, cultures, and creative talents. Support- ing the arts and environment not only nurtures the soul of a community but also stimulates local economies. Legacy Foundation invests in cultural programs through organiza- tions such as South Shore Arts, Save the Dunes, and Books, Brushes, and Bands to foster an environment where creativ- ity thrives, and cultural exchange can flourish. This, in turn, attracts tourists, supports local businesses, and strengthens community pride. 3.Health and Wellness A healthy community is a thriving community. In North- west Indiana, we’re fortunate to have a variety of resources that support physical and mental well-being, such as Cross- roads YMCA, Regional Mental Health, and our local health- care systems. However, ensuring that everyone has access to healthcare, fitness programs, and mental health services is key to long-term success. By supporting wellness initia- tives and making healthcare more accessible, Legacy Foun- dation helps residents live healthier, more fulfilling lives. 4.Economic Development and Local Business Support Northwest Indiana has become a hotspot for entrepre- neurship and innovation. Local businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, creating jobs and contributing to the re- gion’s identity. Strengthening support for small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs not only enhances the local economy but also creates a resilient, self-sustaining com- munity. Through targeted grants and partnerships with groups such as the Crossroads Chamber, NWI Small Busi- ness Development Corporation, and One Region, Legacy Foundation helps nurture the entrepreneurial spirit, ensur- ing that businesses have the tools and resources they need to succeed. Legacy Foundation and the Crossroads Chamber of Commerce are committed to supporting community en- richment efforts across Northwest Indiana, but we can’t do it alone. It will require collaboration across sectors to create an environment where everyone has the opportu- nity to succeed. We encourage local businesses and resi- dents to get involved—whether by donating time, resourc- es, or ideas, or by simply supporting initiatives in their neighborhoods. Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous Northwest Indiana for today and for future generations. If you are looking to get involved, partner, or learn more about how you can contribute to community enrichment efforts in Northwest Indiana, please reach out to me at kanoe@legacyfdn.org. Together, we can continue to make our region an exceptional place to live, work, and raise families. PHOTO CREDIT: SOUTH SHORE CVA WWW.CROSSROADSCHAMBER.ORG 5Northwest Indiana has long been known for its tremendous steel industry, year after year pro- ducing about 25% the nations steel, with sheet products for our cars and appliances, as well as bars and plates for all different types of indus- trial and construction uses. Lake County with a population of almost 500,000, over 500 square miles of land, and 19 communities, plays a big role in that steel production, but over the last decade or so we are seeing more and more di- versification of our industry… and that’s a good thing to help maintain a thriving economy. That diversification started with companies like Albanese Confec- tionary Group, produc- ing the finest gummy bears on the planet, Hoist Lift Trucks, pro- ducing a broad range of high-capacity lift trucks, and distribution centers like Domino’s Pizza, Amazon, and re- cently announced John Deere. Technology and tech related companies are also part of that growth as evidenced by the arrival of Digital Crossroads, a $60 million data colocation center in north Hammond on the Indiana/Illinois state line. Easy access to the City of Chicago’s amenities is a huge plus and that access will get even better with the South Shore Commuter Rail completion of $1.5 billion Double Track Westlake Corridor projects in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
